LinkedIn Suspends AI Training Using UK User Data
LinkedIn, the widely known professional networking platform owned by Microsoft, has recently suspended its use of UK user data for training its artificial intelligence (AI) models.
This decision comes hot on the heels of concerns expressed by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
The allegations concerned LinkedIn’s opt-in approach for using user data in AI model training. The ICO pointed out that users’ “privacy rights will be respected from the outset.” Acknowledging the concerns, LinkedIn has now confirmed that it will cease using data from users in the UK, EU, European Economic Area, and Switzerland for such purposes.
LinkedIn’s use of user-generated content such as posts and interactions were pivotal in training its “generative” AI tools, sparking the controversy. Such tools, including chatbots and image generators, depend heavily on vast pools of data to educate themselves and enhance their capability to generate human-like text and images. LinkedIn’s assertion was that the application of such tools could benefit the users by assisting them with tasks like crafting messages for recruiters.
Stephen Almond, the Executive Director at ICO, appreciated LinkedIn’s responsiveness to its concerns. A LinkedIn spokesperson, on the other hand, stressed that automation has always played a part in LinkedIn products, also stating that users have always had a choice regarding the use of their data.
This incident underscores the growing scrutiny of personal data use in AI development. The regulatory landscape surrounding user data privacy has indeed been tight, a fact that becomes more apparent with the rigorous privacy regulations put in place in the UK and EU. An analogous instance occurred earlier this year when Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, met with pushback from the ICO and had to stall its plans to use UK user data for AI training.
As a consequence of these undertakings, LinkedIn is likely to engage more with the ICO and potentially revamp its data practices before it resumes using UK user data in AI training. If anything, this situation indeed underscores the necessity for tech corporations to prioritize user privacy and transparency when it comes to developing and deploying AI systems.
